What are Braces?

Braces are dental appliances that correct your bite and smile by moving your teeth.

TRADITIONAL BRACES

These are brackets that attach to your teeth. With the help of thin wire attachments, these brackets guide your teeth into position. Traditional braces are still the fastest, and most cost-effective way to align teeth. They can also treat more advanced cases than other types of braces.

CERAMIC BRACES

These work exactly like traditional braces, but the brackets are made from a clear ceramic material that blends in with teeth. The wires are tooth colored, so they blend in with teeth as well. Ceramic braces are popular with adults who want to be discrete but still enjoy the shorter treatment time of traditional braces.

What is the Right Age for Braces?

PRE-ADOLESCENT CARE
We advise parents to schedule their child’s first orthodontic evaluation around the age of 7. While most children won’t need braces at this age, it is sometimes possible to prevent complex misalignment from developing with early intervention.

ADOLESCENT CARE
The optimal time for braces is between 10 and 15 years of age. Adult teeth are not yet firmly set in place, making them easier and faster to straighten. Treatment during these years often results in a boost in self-confidence through the teenage and early adult years.

ADULT CARE
It is still possible to get braces as an adult. In recent years, adult braces have become far more discrete and efficient. Ceramic braces and Invisalign are particularly popular with adults, since they are clear and hard to notice in social settings.

Benefits of Braces

Our patients consistently report that the biggest benefit of braces is improved confidence and quality-of-life. They no longer feel the need to hide their smile in photos or while eating, and feel more relaxed in social settings. Other major benefits include:

  • Improved ability to chew food, and alleviation of speech impairment.
  • Easier to brush, clean and floss teeth. Generally braces reduce your risk of developing cavities or periodontal (gum) disease.
  • Reduced grinding and chipping of teeth, and lower risk of injury from protruding teeth.

How Much do Braces Cost?

The cost of braces can vary depending on your specific case and bio-mechanics. Typical cases range in price between $4500-$6000. The best way to get a precise quote is to come by for a free orthodontic consultation.

We understand orthodontic treatment can be a significant investment, but the long term benefits are well worth it. We take all major insurance, and we offer 0% interest payment plans to make treatment more affordable. We’re happy to work with you to explore your financial options and determine what works best for you.

What to Expect During Treatment

YOUR FIRST APPOINTMENT
The first visit is your initial patient consultation. During this visit Dr. Girn introduces himself and speaks with you to understand your unique situation. You receive a comprehensive oral exam to determine whether braces are needed. If braces are necessary, Dr. Girn will explain the different types of braces available, answer all your questions, and provide an outline of your treatment timeline. Most cases take 15-18 months to treat. Finally, our Treatment Coordinator will explain pricing, payment plan options, and can handle all your insurance processing.

YOUR SECOND APPOINTMENT
This appointment is your “Orthodontic records” appointment. At this appointment molds, x-rays, and pictures, and measurements of your teeth are taken. Dr. Girn needs these records to construct your detailed and fully customized treatment plan.

GETTING BRACES
It’s finally time to get your braces put on! The process is fairly simple. First your teeth get a deep cleaning and a polish. Dr. Girn then attaches the brackets to your teeth with a special adhesive made specially for teeth. The last step is to place the wires on the brackets, and you’re ready to go! Dr. Girn will provide detailed home care instructions (how to brush, floss, what to eat/not eat, etc). Moving forward, you can expect to visit our office ever 4–6 weeks for a checkup and adjustment.

YOUR FIRST DAYS IN BRACES
At first braces feel like they “stick out” against your lips and cheeks. Over the first few days you become accustomed to your braces and the sensation passes. Some patients report sensitive spots on their cheeks during this adjustment period. In this case, applying dental wax to the bracket causing irritation relieves sensitivity. Within a few days your cheeks adapt to the brackets. Some teeth may feel sore in the hours directly after leaving the office. This is normal, and will pass within a day. You may wish to take over-the-counter pain medication to help with any soreness.

— Myrtle K. – Etobicoke

Dr. Girn and his staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and very kind. Having had braces in my early 40’s, I can now smile and not be ashamed of my smile. I love showing my teeth and longer hide them. I especially enjoy reactions when I share my before and after pictures. I love Dr. Girn and the Home of Dentistry!!

— Hubert B. – Mississauga

When I first came for my consultation, I had zero knowledge about braces. Dr. Girn took the time to explain everything thoroughly to me, even including the financials which made me feel so comfortable with beginning my treatment with Dr. Girn. I had my braces on for a little over a year and the results were better than I expected. I get complimented on my smile all the time and that makes me feel so good! Everyone here is so friendly and welcoming.
