Cleanings and Prevention

What is a Dental Cleaning?

A dental cleaning is a crucial part of oral hygiene that involves the removal of plaque, tartar, and staining from the teeth that the body builds up naturally over time. Frequent dental cleanings are important in keeping the gums and teeth healthy. Dental cleanings generally range between 3-6 months and varies from patient to patient depending on oral hygiene. The frequency of cleanings are determined for each individual by a professional Registered Dental Hygienist based on many factors such as diet (smoking, coffee, tea and other stain causing foods and drinks which contribute to staining), frequency of plaque and tartar build-up,  home care (brushing techniques, flossing), and gum health. During a dental cleaning, the hygienist uses specialty dental instruments called “scalers” to remove the hardened build up that a regular toothbrush cannot remove. In addition to the cleaning, the hyginiest also provides the following services:

  • Reviewing and updating medical history, including information about heart problems, pregnancy, diabetes and medications, which may have an impact on your oral health
  • X-rays or examination of teeth to detect decay
  • Fluoride application
  • Sealants (for children)
  • Polishing teeth, including fillings and crowns
  • Cleaning and adjustment of dentures and partial dentures
  • Tooth brushing and flossing instructions
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Recommendations for future treatment: when to return for follow-up hygiene treatment, periodontal (gum) concerns or restorative options.

Hygienists are also  trained in detecting several other oral issues that may go unnoticed otherwise:

  • Periodontal disease (red, shiny, puffy, sore, or sensitive gums, bleeding when brushing or flossing, persistent bad breath)
  • Sensitivity to heat, cold, sweets, pressure
  • Oral cancer (unexplained bleeding, open sores that don’t heal within 7-10 days, white or red patches, numbness or tingling, small lumps or thickening on gums, lumps on cheeks, tongue, floor or roof of mouth).

Your dental hygienist is the most knowledgeable and qualified provider that can determine the frequency of cleanings. Regular check-ups and cleanings, along with good preventative home care ensures the best possible oral hygiene.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Cleanings?

  • Prevents tooth decay
  • Brightens smile (removes staining)
  • Boosts overall health
  • Prevents/reduces bad breath
  • Prevents tooth loss (healthy gums=healthy bone structure to maintain teeth in position)
  • Prevents gingivitis

How Much Does a Dental Cleaning Cost?

Most insurance companies cover cleanings under preventative care. For patients who don`t have insurance coverage, a cleaning can range anywhere been $150-$200 depending on that number of units of scaling that needs to be completed. 0% interest monthly payment plans are available for patients to take advantage of for extensive treatment.

Testimonials

I've been coming to Dr. Girn's office for about 4 years and I usually request to see my favourite hygienist, her name is Sal. She's so gentle and makes my usual dreadful cleanings so pleasant. I have very sensitive teeth but she knows exactly how to deal with me. She doesn't just jump into the cleaning, she actually takes the time to ask about my personal life too which I love. Sal is a very professional and skilled hygienist, thank you Sal for always taking care of me!
