Caring for Your Child’s Teeth this Halloween

Aside from Christmas, Halloween is many people’s favorite holiday. Between picking out costumes and the endless candy, there’s no shortage of fun. This year will be different, as many community events are cancelled. You can still celebrate and have fun. You just have to think outside of the box a little.

Have the neighbors on your block plan to trick-or-treat socially distant style. Each house can set out a table with individual bags of candy and goodies. Place pumpkins or other yard decorations six feet apart so children know where to stand in line. Or, take a nod from the Easter Bunny and hide your kids’ Halloween candy throughout your house. Enjoy your sweets, but remember to take care of your teeth at Halloween and all year.

Make Brushing a Priority

To say that everyone’s daily routines are out of whack is a major understatement. Many children are home doing virtual school. Some parents might be working from home–or at least trying to! It can be easy to fall into bad habits but continue to make good oral health a priority. If you indulge in some Halloween candy, don’t forget to brush! The American Dental Association recommends brushing your teeth twice a day, for two minutes at a time.[1]

Moms and dads, remember that Halloween treats can be things other than candy. A paperback book, art supplies, and playdough are fun gifts to receive. These presents will last longer than candy and even provide some entertainment.

Keep Routine Dental Check-ups

Your schedules may be disrupted right now, but it’s important to stay happy and healthy. If you are due for a dental exam, see if your dentist is currently taking routine appointments. And never hesitate to call if you have a dental emergency. Your dentist is here for you. Have a great Halloween!
